Performance

Performance and brand — the end of a false choice

"Sales now" versus "brand for later" is the argument that costs the most. The best results appear where those two worlds meet.

In many companies a quiet war is going on: the performance team wants budget for sales right now, the brand team wants to invest in recognition for years to come. Both are right — and both lose when they treat it as a zero-sum game.

Two horizons, one funnel

Performance harvests demand that already exists. Brand creates demand that doesn't exist yet. If you build only performance, you eventually compete for ever more expensive, exhausting demand. If you build only brand, you lack the mechanism that turns attention into results.

A healthy system needs both. Brand lowers the cost of performance, because people click more readily on what they know. Performance delivers the data that teaches the brand what truly resonates.

Brand without performance is impatient. Performance without brand is short-sighted. Growth lives in between.

How to bring the two together

  • Shared business goals instead of separate KPIs that contradict each other.
  • Creative that builds the brand even in conversion-focused advertising.
  • Measurement over a longer window, to see the brand's effect on campaign efficiency.

The end of the false choice begins with a single table where both teams sit down. Then the question stops being "brand or sales" and becomes "what split between them gives us the most growth this year and in three years' time".
